Io, Saturnalia!/Zabagabe!

Happy first day of Saturnalia! How many years have foreverseenstar and clarkdreams and I been celebrating this holiday? It's been a while...

First, for those of you who aren't up to snuff on your pagan holidays, here's some background courtesy of Wikipedia:

The Saturnalia was a large and important public festival in Rome. In time, it became one of the most popular Roman festivals. It involved the conventional sacrifices, a couch (lectisternium) set out in front of the temple of Saturn and the untying of the ropes that bound the statue of Saturn during the rest of the year. Besides the public rites there were a series of holidays and customs celebrated privately. The celebrations included a school holiday, the making and giving of small presents (saturnalia et sigillaricia) and a special market (sigillaria). Gambling was allowed for all, even slaves; however, although it was officially condoned only during this period, one should not assume that it was rare or much remarked upon during the rest of the year. It was a time to eat, drink, and be merry. It was license within careful boundaries; it reversed the social order without subverting it. It was also an opportunity for men to be completely free with their fellowmen, sometimes evolving into homosexual and sometimes also pedophilic relations. The toga was not worn, but rather the synthesis, i.e. colorful, informal "dinner clothes"; and the pileus (freedman's hat) was worn by everyone. Slaves were exempt from punishment, and treated their masters with disrespect. A Saturnalicius princeps was elected master of ceremonies for the proceedings.

The customary greeting for the occasion is a "io, Saturnalia!" — io (pronounced "yo") being a Latin interjection related to "ho" (as in "Ho, praise to Saturn").

I think the whole thing must have started freshman year of high school, or was it before? I'm not sure what came first... foreverseenstar and I looking up the holiday, or us actually celebrating it in Latin class. Well, whichever came first, a long time ago we learned about Saturnalia. clarkdreams and I kept the tradition going of celebrating it because we used to celebrate it in Latin class (Miss Kell... ehu!), which we both took together for four years. One year we had an awesome Saturnalia party with gift giving and cake and it was AWESOME. foreverseenstar and I continue to celebrate because of an episode of Space Cases called "Who Goes Where?" in which Catalina is celebrating a week-long Saturnaian festival of rejoicing (by dancing around in elaborate rainbow costumes while chanting Barnes & Barnes album titles). Coincidence...?

But whatever PAD and Bill's intentions were or wherever their idea came from, foreverseenstar and I decided that we would remember Space Cases on this day with greetings of "Zabagabe!" and for a while we made it a point to wear bright, festive clothing. Hmm... if only I still had those rainbow sneakers.

So yes, in addition to today being Kate Hewlett's birthday and warriorssoul121's birthday (happy birthday, guys!) it is also my favorite pagan holiday. So everyone go out and celebrate, damnit. And do some extra for me because tomorrow is another day full of torturous genetics studying (I fucking hate this class more than anything). Later, skaterz! Zabagabe!
