So this trip, it's called Courtney and Laura Take North America. It's a cross country road trip that starts on August 9, 2008 and ends on September 2, 2008. Stops include Toronto, Niagara Falls, Chicago, Yellowstone National Park, Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon National Park, Albuquerque Dallas, New Orleans (assuming it's not still a swampy mess), and Atlanta (arriving just in time for Dragon*Con). I'm not sure one can call it a cross-country trip as it's more of a round-country trip. It's still in the extremely preliminary stages because feasibility has yet to be determined. But lets weigh the pros and cons of this, shall we?

  • With hotels, car rental, gas, food, and other miscellaneous crap the trip will probably cost about $3200/person (assuming there's two of us and Dragon*Con is included). That's pretty frakin' expensive.
  • I'd need to take at least a two week leave of absence from work. And a crapload of vacation days. 1) I don't know if my work would even let me do that. 2) That's a missed paycheck I'd be out which really adds another $1000 to the cost of the trip.
  • I wouldn't be home for my birthday or EB's birthday.
  • I'd be without Lola for almost an entire month! I'm not sure I could deal with the trauma and guilt of leaving her, and I'd have to make sure she was taken care of. My kitty. :(

  • I have always wanted to drive across country. EB will never want to do it with me, and now seems like a perfect time. Hopefully I'll be starting nursing school in 2009 which will eat up a year, and then after that I might start having like for real responsibilities. I feel like this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity, like if I'm going to ever do this now is the time.
  • I'll get to visit with friends I only get to see a few times a year (if that) which will be nice.
  • It's going to be fucking awesome!!

So really the biggest con is that I am broke. Extremely broke. This year has put me out of commission and it's only going to keep bleeding me dry. (Seriously, expect crappy Christmas presents.) The whole not eating out thing? Not going so well. I HAVE NO DISCIPLINE. So seriously, please, if you're really my friend, do not ask me to do anything that involves me spending money. Because I won't be able to say no. Because I suck.

But anyway... want do you guys think? Should foreverseenstar and I take North America by storm?

Should we do this?

Yes, that's awesome!
No, you are crazy, and not in a good way.
Ack, that's a hard decision! IDK!

If we go, do you want to come along? (No, for serious.)

Yes, but it's totally not feasible.
No thanks.

So, yeah. I had some other stuffs to talk about but I feel like this journal entry should be devoted to the fact that foreverseenstar and I are completely insane. Later, skaterz.

Yes, that's awesome! In fact, I've been contemplating something similar for several months now. It'd be in 2009 most likely, and the overriding criteria would be that I set foot in all 48 continental states during the trip. Yours is 31 states, but comes reeeallly close to a few others (Vermont, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Florida).

If you're serious about this, I would highly recommend looking into CouchSurfing. This site lets you find people in the areas where you're traveling who are visitor-friendly and will let you crash at their place instead of getting a hotel room. It could save you several hundred dollars or more if utilized to its full extent. (And your route goes right through my area. If I have my own place by then, I might be able to help out!)

That map lies! I totally go through Delaware to get home, though probably not PA. So I guess it evens out.

All 48 states would be cool, but I'm not really interested in New England since I've been to all of them and can get to any one of them in less than 2 hours. :-P

That's a wicked cool site. I'll have to keep that in mind! Thanks for the tip!

Re: *sniff sniff*
Well if we don't go to Toronto maybe we'll swing by since it'll be more on the way. ;)

You should go! Idk. If $$ is the problem, I guess the more feasible option would be to cut your trip shorter. Okay I really don't know where Atlanta is from you but I suppose it'll take alot of driving. And is The Point, so less pitstops? Idk ...I'm not very helpful am I ;P

wtf no Pittsburgh?!? The Burgh is an essential stop on any american road trip. Canada deserves no place on an Great American Road Trip! :>
